Questions about Breast Enhancement
Breast Augmentation Surgery in Oakland, El Cerrito, Berkeley and Emeryville, California
What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement or breast enhancement, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to give women an ideal shape and size to their breasts. The breast augmentation procedure can enhance both your aesthetic profile and overall sense of self-confidence.
What are breast implants made of?
Breast implants can be made with either saline or silicone. Each breast implant has its unique benefits and drawbacks. Depending upon the location you receive, your breast implants will determine which type of implant you receive. For example, you will receive saline breast implants with transumbilical breast augmentation. Read more about the Types of Implants.
How long will it take to recover from breast enhancement surgery?
Recovery from breast enhancement depends on your body’s natural ability to heal. In most cases, you can expect to be able to return to work within one week, and resume regular physical activities within three to six weeks. Dr. Patino will work closely with you to ensure you are healing appropriately during this time.
Will breast enhancement interfere with breast feeding?
Breast enhancement does not require your milk ducts to be severed, and as such will not interfere with breast feeding. To fully enhance the appearance of your breasts, Dr. Patino may need to reposition your nipple during your augmentation. This is done with great care to ensure your ability to breast feed is not impacted at all.
Will breast implants make breast cancer screening more difficult?
Depending on your breast implant location, screening for breast cancer may be more difficult. Mammography technicians should be told beforehand that you have breast implants. The pictures will then be taken from a different angle. If you have subglandularly placed breast implants or silicone breast implants, you may be required to get an MRI rather than a mammogram if there is difficulty in reading the information. Overall, having breast implants does not make the detection of breast cancer any more difficult, it simply changes the methods used in detection.
Who is an ideal candidate for breast enhancement surgery?
Anyone who is dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts is an ideal candidate for breast enhancement. Women born with breasts they feel are too small and women who have lost shape and size due to pregnancy and age can both benefit from this cosmetic procedure.
