Questions about Breast Lift Surgery

Breast Surgery in Oakland, El Cerrito, Berkeley and Emeryville, California

How are breast lifts performed?

Depending on the size, shape, and sag of your breasts, there are different techniques that Dr. Patino can employ to perform a breast lift. In most cases, skin is removed from around the nipple, the nipple is repositioned, and the remaining skin is tightened and firmed to provide a more youthful appearance. Your current breast size and the amount your breasts are sagging will determine the number of incisions required and the amount of skin that will need to be removed.

How long does a breast lift procedure take?

The amount of time required will rely on how much skin Dr. Patino will need to remove. Women with smaller breasts may have this procedure performed in as little as one hour. For women with larger breasts, the entire process may take up to four hours.

Do breast lifts require a hospital stay or long recovery period?

Breast lift surgery is almost always done on an outpatient basis. Dr. Patino may recommend an overnight stay in the hospital if you require an excessive amount of tissue or skin to be removed, but this is uncommon.

The recovery period after a breast lift is generally around four weeks. During this time you may experience some mild pain, swelling, and redness around the surgical area. Dr. Patino will provide you with a prescription for pain medication as well as a support bra to help ease the discomfort during this time.

Are breast lifts permanent?

Breast lifts are not permanent, but their appearance can be extended by proper exercise and diet. Just like your natural breasts, your breast lift will be affected by weight gain, pregnancy, and gravity.

Are there any risks with breast lift surgery?

Breast lifts are an incredibly safe cosmetic procedure, but no surgery is without its risks. Risks associated with any type of surgery include blood clots, infection, excessive bleeding, and allergic reactions to anesthetic.

The risks of breast lifts themselves are primarily aesthetic and include permanent scarring, and asymmetrically aligned nipples. Dr. Patino practices great care during this procedure to minimize scaring and ensure that your breasts are as aesthetically pleasing as possible.
