Submuscular Breast Implant Placement
With this method of breast enhancement, the breast implant is placed below your pectoralis major, the muscle in your chest. There are several advantages to placing the breast implant submuscularly. These include:
- Lower risk of capsular contracture
- More natural looking and comfortable feeling implant
- Reduced instances of sagging
- Less visible rippling
- More conducive to mammograms
The main disadvantages to submuscular implants are that they take longer to be placed, and take much longer to fully recover from. Some patients also experience a higher instance of pain during their recovery time with submuscular breast implant placement.
Subglandular Breast Implant Placement
If you choose subglandular implant placement, Dr. Patino will place the implant above the chest muscle, directly below the mammary gland. The advantages of this placement include:
- Faster, less complex surgery
- Shorter recovery time
- Reduced instances of pain during the healing process
The disadvantages of subglandular implants are that they are not as natural looking as submuscular implants. There may be more visible signs of sagging or rippling, and may require x-rays to replace more traditional forms of cancer screening. There is also a higher chance of capsular contracture with subglandular placement.
